Private clubs, like the Metropolitan Club in the Sears – make that – Willis Tower and the University Club on Monroe Street at Michigan Avenue, offer unparalleled views, facilities, cuisine and service. But these and others only allow members and guests the privilege of hosting events. Here are some venues that will give you and your guests a window to the world that is Chicago.

One private club does open its doors to non-members: The Mid-America Club on the 80th floor of the Aon Center at 200 E. Randolph St. Founded more than 40 years ago, the club boasts something others can’t match: A 360-degree view of the Chicago skyline and lakefront parks and attractions. Planners can host small receptions for 20 guests, a seated banquet for more than 600, or reception for 1,000. The club offers various private rooms and an expandable ballroom in its more than 8,000 square feet.

Perhaps the hottest new sky-high venue to come on line recently is the aptly-named ROOF, the lounge and party space taking up the 27th floor of the Wit Hotel at 201 N. State St. Lines to visit the high-rise venue stretched 30-plus deep this summer to make the scene at ROOF’s indoor and outdoor areas. Reserve this party location and have all 7,000 square feet for you and your guests. Long-time Chicagoans know the “grand dame” of vertical venues is the Signature Room at the 95th in the John Hancock Center, 875 N. Michigan Av. Known for fine food, romantic dinners, floor-to-ceiling windows and views that can bring in three surrounding states, the Signature Room also can be reserved for a wide range of events, from rehearsal dinners, bridal showers and weddings to themed parties, receptions and corporate dinners.

Want someplace a little more “down-to-earth?” Here are three locations that are, indeed, up on the roof, only a lot closer to the pavement than the aforementioned.

A stalwart on the Greek Town dining circuit, Pegasus at 130 S. Halsted St. opens its Veranda, a second-level outdoor space between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Guests can dine on Greek tapas-style cuisine and take in awesome views of the Chicago skyline. The space can be reserved for 20 to 80 people, depending on the day of the week.

The Rock Bottom Brewery anchors the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and State Streets. Along with various traditional style indoor party rooms, this brewery and casual restaurant offers a rooftop deck during summer months. Out in west suburban Oak Park, the Avenue Ale House, 25 S. Oak Park Av., is a popular, spacious year-round restaurant and lounge for after work drinks, a great “pub” menu, live music and catching sports on huge plasma TVs. When the weather warms up, patrons often head upstairs to the only outdoor rooftop deck in the west suburbs. The views aren’t great, but the casual atmosphere, great food and drink make the Ale House a great option.

Zapatista

Zapatista is one of Chicago’s best authentic Mexican restaurants. Favorite dishes include the made-to-order guacamole and the fajitas which are served sizzling hot in a molcajete or lave stone. Zapatista is located at 1307 S Wabash Avenue in Chicago’s South Loop, a short cab ride from McCormick Place Chicago and The Hyatt McCormick Place. Zapatista is a great location for any special event. Our family style menu, “Mesa de amigos” (table of friends), encourages an interactive experience in a casual restaurant setting for groups of up to 250.

Room 21

If you’ve got out-of-town guests who want to get an authentic Chicago experience, you could take them to one of the many joints claiming to be the home of Chicago-style pizza or to one of the city’s many steakhouses. But if you want something really authentic, head over to Room 21, a remodeled warehouse with a colorful background. The building housing the eatery is also the location where Elliot Ness first busted Al Capone during Prohibition. In fact, it gets its name from a door labeled “Room 21” found at the end of an escape tunnel during the building’s renovation.

The décor in Room 21’s dining room can best be categorized as upscale brothel, which is fitting in that the famous Everleigh Sisters ran their house of ill repute not far away. The upscale American menu holds its own against the lush décor. Though the prices are so hefty that you might expect that a visit with one of the Everleigh’s employees was included in the meal, you do get a lot of bang for your buck. Room 21 is located at 2110 S. Wabash and within walking distance of McCormick Place Chicago Convention Center.

Reggie’s

Have your next event at REGGIES ROCK CLUB or REGGIES MUSIC JOINT. We accommodate groups of all sizes. Dining at The Drake Hotel - Chicago’s Finest Afternoon Tea Service

Tea has been a long tradition at the Drake Hotel, Chicago, though not always in the fashion that it is today. The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and dignitaries the likes of the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton have sipped and supped here since. In 1958, Queen Elizabeth joined us for tea at the Drake. This was a historical moment not only for the Drake, but also for Chicago.

In the 1970’s, the Palm Court served tea to her majesty the Empress of Japan. The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze place was introduced in the room by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed 365 days a year by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire. The Palm Court is available for special occasions and private functions.

Afternoon tea
Afternoon Tea takes place daily in our traditional Tea Lobby featuring live harp music performed 365 days a year . There are several seatings per day from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, each last approximately an hour and a half and reservations are recommended.

Evening Cocktails
Elegant, cozy bar taking the best of wines and champagnes by the glass. Palm Court is a pre-dinner meeting place, or it could be a meeting place for drinks after work. Food will also be offered at the Palm Court, with a menu comprising of soups, salads, sandwiches and sweet selections. Also, a large selection of imported beers, spirits and cocktails made with premium mixers.
