Bring on the Holidays 2009: Creative Ways Adults Can Celebrate
By Edward M. Bury, APR

It’s true: the holiday season really is for kids. But older kids like to enjoy this time of year, too.
Tried and true ways to celebrate the holidays – a Christmas pageant, dinner at a top restaurant, New Year’s Eve at a downtown hotel – are tremendous and can lead to great memories.  But if these types of activities have been on your schedule before, why not explore some other options?

In a vibrant, diverse metropolitan region like Chicago, there are dozens of cool ways to deviate from the norm. Consider these “adults only” suggestions for truly memorable holiday celebrations.

Odyssey, Spirit of Chicago or Mystic Blue Cruises.  Yes, winter cold and snow does not stop the crew at Entertainment Cruises from offering evening dinner and party cruise options throughout the holidays and year-round. Entertainment Cruises can create a custom holiday package for just about any size group, or offer bookings on evening cruises for couples looking for an “offshore” way to enjoy the season.  The Odyssey hosts Crystal Nights Holiday Dinner Soirées on selected Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings featuring delicious food stations,  attentive service, live entertainment, dancing and a dazzling holiday décor.  The more intimate Sprit of Chicago holds Winter Lights Holiday Dinner Cruises with buffets, live solos from the ship’s talented staff, an interactive DJ and entertainment for dancing. Or try the Blue Ice Holiday Dinner Cruises on the Mystic Blue and enjoy a tasty holiday dinner buffet, hot DJ beats, contemporary holiday décor and extended dock time for even more partying.  All cruises depart from Navy Pier, and all offer one other thing in common: Spectacular evening views of Chicago’s magnificent skyline.  Visit Entertainment Cruises or call 312-321-7614 for more details.

The Second City’s Exceedingly Dysfunctional Holiday Revue.  If you think your family defines “dysfunctional” around the holidays, consider what will take place when those zany characters from Second City gather around the fireplace.  Listen and laugh as the troupe lampoons common holiday missteps, including “creative” words to traditional carols and a disgruntled elf ruining the North Pole Christmas party.  The sketches will be peppered with course language, so definitely leave the kids at home.  Dates and times vary, but the Holiday Revue will be performed at the Second City’s three area venues: 1616 N. Wells St., Chicago (312-337-3992), 777 N. Green St., Chicago (312-733-6000) and 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights (847-577-2121). Making plans for New Year’s Eve? A special performance of the Revue will be held December 31 at the Wells Street location.

Festa’s 14th Annual Twelve Bars Of Xmas Pub Crawl.  The title of this event is a little misleading, but it’s certainly an adults-only evening. Organized by a party-planning company, the crawl starts in the ever-popular Wrigleyville neighborhood along Clark Street and snakes its way north to encompass a few more than a dozen bars: A total of 36 watering holes are listed on the crawl. Participants get a T-shirt and gym bag, along with laminated pass allowing admittance to all 36 establishments where they can opt for drink specials. This year, the crawl will take place December 12. Call Festa at 773-956-8269 for details and ticket information.

Pops for Champagne New Year’s Eve.  What’s New Year’s Eve without some good champagne? For those who want to raise their flute to ring in 2010, this temple to all things sparkling wine is a great choice.  Make reservations for a late seating (from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. December 31) bash that will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres, dessert, party favors, and of course, lots of champagne. Select from seats at the bar, a table or a booth.  A jazz quartet will perform that evening in the lower level club, which is designed to resemble a Parisian night spot.  Pops is located steps west of the Magnificent Mile at 601 N. State St.  Call 312-266-7677 for reservations.

13th Annual New Year’s Eve Rock ‘n Roll Ball.  If you must celebrate the arrival of the New Year in a hotel, consider The Hotel InterContinental O’Hare in Rosemont.  Yes, there will be a champagne toast and giant balloon drop, along with something special for music lovers. This year, the main entertainment will be provided by a great modern rock band, the Gin Blossoms.  Also on the agenda are Too White Crew, a hip-hop tribute group and local DJs.  The hotel is located at 5300 N. River Rd.  Call 847-544-5300
