Success Means Learning To Say “No”

By admin | November 15, 2011

JUST SAY “NO” Jon Wool, President/Owner, Finesse Cuisine
Success means learning to say “No.”

This was the topic of a presentation by a noted business leader at a conference I recently attended. Saying “No,” however, is inconceivable to any caterer who is wired to please. In fact, I was trained to say “Yes” to just about anything that wouldn’t cause flood or fire. You may find that adapting to this new philosophy can be a challenge but learning to just say “No” frees you to cater to the clients who are the best fit for your company.

Since the recession, like most companies, Finesse has learned to economize while doing everything possible to increase revenues. To support this effort, we have indeed challenged ourselves to say “No” when we are asked to operate in a manner contrary to our standards or price points. Here’s why: between the austerity measures in the marketplace since 2008 and the advent of the gigantic international catering conglomerates, there is a tendency for the
smaller caterer to try to be all things to all people at all prices. It can be argued that this approach keeps cash flowing and employees working. However, it is more likely that your company’s vision, integrity, and profitability will be compromised. When you have to bend and twist to accommodate the requests of a client who is not a good fit, you risk losing focus on the clients who are your Right Fit. Considered this way, it becomes clear that saying “No”
is the smart thing to do. Saying “No” to one thing frees you up to saying “Yes” to something more valuable.

Not long ago, I was consulting with the off-premise catering arm of a fine dining restaurant. While this client was quick to embrace certain fundamentals of off-premise operations, they had lost sight of why their restaurant’s style of food and service is so popular. They were saying “Yes” to anything that came their way and they were floundering. Plus, they were working way too hard and far too many hours! It was very difficult for the directors to understand the concept of Right Fit. What finally resonated was a quote by iconic jazz
musician, Dizzy Gillespie: “It’s taken me all my life to learn what NOT to play.” The trumpet sounded loudly and clearly to this client. They learned to say “No” to anything outside of their range, refocused on their initial mission, and began to accommodate better fit events.

I have learned that while the customer may always be right, he may not always be the right customer for me. Therefore, I have found myself saying “No” more often and coaching clients to do the same. In turn, I have gained more respect from clients and staff alike. This has been empowering and invigorating, and our bottom line reflects the change. Will I revert back to my old philosophy any time soon? Hell No!

45th Anniversary of Gemini 12 at Adler Planetarium

By admin | November 4, 2011

45th Anniversary of Gemini 12 at Adler Planetarium
Friday, November 11 – Tuesday, November 15

Captain James A. Lovell, Jr. and Buzz Aldrin launched into space on November 11, 1966 for the final Project Gemini mission. The objective of the mission was to subject man and equipment to space flight for up to two weeks in duration and perfect methods of re-entering the atmosphere and landing at a preselected point. This successful 6-day mission helped to pave the way for America’s moon landing in 1969.

The fully-restored Gemini 12 spacecraft arrived at the Adler Planetarium in 2006 on loan from the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. The spacecraft is the centerpiece of the Adler’s Shoot for the Moon exhibition. This permanent exhibition tells the inspiring stories of space exploration and America’s race to the Moon. Among the collection of Captain Lovell’s personal space artifacts, visitors can see the original flight plans and manuals flown on the Gemini 12 mission.

From November 11 – 15, Adler Planetarium visitors can take a guided tour of the Shoot for the Moon exhibition and participate in free activities. Build and test your own rocket building skills in a family workshop and launch a balloon rocket at an activity cart. Little ones can learn through imaginary play by interacting with the Adler’s own “astronaut” in Planet Explorers and embark on their own mission.

Adler Planetarium
1300 S. Lake Shore Drive
Chicago, IL  60605

The Adler Planetarium is one of Chicago’s major museums in downtown Chicago near Soldier field.  For more details, visit www.adlerplanetarium.org

Two Key Ways to Optimize for Local Searches

By admin | October 21, 2011

Two Key Ways to Optimize for Local Searches

"When you perform a search at Google or Bing, the results are significantly influenced by your physical location, even on queries where you don't specify a location," writes Ray Comstock at Search Engine Watch. "So if you're in New York and you search for [pizza], or [hot tubs] or [DMV], your results will be very different than if you do the same searches in San Diego."

To help businesses increase the chances they'll show up in local searches, Comstock offers tips like these:

Create pages dedicated to localized content. Identify information that is relevant to certain geographical areas—whether at the state, city or community level. Examples include dealer locations, shipping rates and climate-based recommendations for your product.

"By doing so," he says, "you not only increase your propensity to show up in organic search queries in those places, but you also potentially improve your conversion rate by creating a more custom experience for ... users [that] speaks specifically to their needs."

Create link connectivity with websites relevant to each region. Pursue reciprocity with local business directories and bloggers. "If you want to make Google believe that your site is a great resource for people in New York," he notes, "they expect to see sites that are relevant to New York linking to you."

Avoid the appearance of spam by selecting link partners that provide your visitors with relevant, valuable content. "They should become a seamless part of the user experience of your site for the best results," he explains.

The Po!nt: Think global, link local. When properly constructed, a local search strategy will create value for customers and search engines.
